Touchless Paper Towel Dispenser – 31th Edition

February 27th, 2010 admin No comments

When I cook, despite that I’m a pretty decent cook, it still looks like a bomb was dropped in the kitchen.  That usually means I’m covered in half the items I’ve measured out for a recipe.  When I go to clean off my hands, I’d rather not mess up four pieces of paper towel while I’m trying to grab for only one of those pieces.  Thankfully someone has created a way to prevent getting gunk all over the entire roll when you just need one small piece.

Just wave your hand in front of the infrared sensor and it will offer up one piece of your paper towels.  It is smart enough to sense the perforations in the sheets of paper towel, so it knows exactly how much it’s spitting out.  You can set it to dispense 1, 2 or just a half of a sheet.  The Touchless Paper Towel Dispenser comes in red, silver and white.  You can purchase it for $79.95 through Hammacher.

Siemens Zeolith dishwasher saves energy – 30th Edition

February 22nd, 2010 admin No comments

Take a look at this dishwasher. It certainly is better looking than any dishwasher that I have seen in any house, as it has a beautiful transparent aesthetic quality about it. Yet there is more to this dishwasher than just its looks. In fact, if the Siemens Zeolith dishwasher was the ugliest in the world, I would still want it.

The Zeolith has a design that allows it to recycle the energy of humidity left over from the wash cycle, and it does it with zeolites. What are zeolites? Special moisture absorbing materials that can release stored up heat, not to mention absorbing moisture from the air inside the machine.

So after they absorb the moisture of the air, the three pounds of zeolites in the Zeolith can release that heat into the wash water, which will result in a faster load cycle. All in all, this saves energy, which is very much needed. Because if there is one thing that dishwashers are good at, and shouldn’t be good at, it is raising power bills.

The Seimens Zeolith is “widely available in Europe”, but I don’t think that there is any place to purchase it in the United States. For some reason, my source does not have a price.

Jenn-Air oven has touchscreen LCD display – 28th Edition

February 12th, 2010 admin No comments

JJW3830WP_lg_270x454It isn’t very often that I cover ovens on Coolest Gadgets, but it isn’t every oven that has a 7-inch full-color touchscreen LCD.

This 30 inch Double Wall Oven with V2 Vertical Dual-Fan Convection System by Jenn-Air has an incorporated cooking guide to help those cooking.

This Culinary Center allows the user to select options for adjusting the cooking cycle, and delivers a desired end-result. For example, it has a picture of what medium rare looks like, for the culinary deficient. It can also tell cooks where to stick the a meat thermometer.

When the oven is not cooking, the user can adjust the screens so they are showing something like a floral pattern, or an analog or digital clock.

The touchscreen makes it easy for the iGeneration to cook as the user can adjust temperature by just sliding their finger across the screen. No more of those old school dials or switches. In fact, I can see all ovens of the future adopting Jenn-Air’s model, making switches and buttons a thing of the past.

I don’t see a price of this oven on the Jenn-Air website, but I’m guessing it is slightly out of my range. In all honesty, I don’t even need two ovens. Clearly these Jenn-Air ovens are there for both Julie and Julia.

Cornucopia from MIT could be the next form of artificial food – 25th Edition

January 27th, 2010 admin No comments

mit-food-printerYou know what you are looking at? Is it a dozen eggs that were laid by chickens of the future? No, but it is the food of the future.

Allow me to elaborate. This is the Cornucopia, a food preparation machine that is developed by Marcelo Coelho and Amit Zoran, two designers at MIT.

Think of the Cornucopia as an early stage of the food synthesizer from Star Trek. Remember that machine that would give you any food that you wanted? Well, this is a 3D food printer.

Essentially, what you see in those strangely-shaped capsules are flavors. By mixing them together, you get “the creation of flavors and textures that would be completely unimaginable through other cooking techniques”.

So, if you want to eat some lasagna, just mix two parts green, with three parts orange, and four parts red. I honestly don’t know if you can bring these combination together as a liquid or a solid.

Maybe the end result is that goop stuff that you see Neo and the others eating in The Matrix. As I recall, it tasted like “runny eggs” or “a bowl of snot”. I can’t imagine that the Cornucopia would be a cornucopia of good tastes. But this is MIT developing this, so who knows how it might taste.

Mandometer scolds you to eat slower – 24th Edition

January 22nd, 2010 admin No comments

mandometer

I tend to catch a whole lot of teasing for the snail-like pace at which I tend to eat.  I don’t exactly do it to eat healthier either, I just have always eaten slowly.  However, I’m liking that there is a gadget that is meant to help people slow down their eating habits.  Mostly so I have a decent comeback.  In part though because I know eating habits can seem close to impossible to change.  With this gadget to yell at you to slow down, hopefully you can get yourself to a controlled pace.

The Mandometer was created in an outpatient treatment center for eating disorders in San Diego California.  I suppose if anyone knows how to break eating habits, it’s them.  Underneath of your plate is a scale that keeps track of those sudden drops in weight.  Within 18 months the Mandometer claims to lower your BMI by 2 percent.  Plus it’s meant to help you with long term changes instead of working like a crash diet.
